Legal information & privacy

Everything you need to know about YouKlai: using the app, protecting your data, understanding your rights and getting in touch with us.

Privacy and data

What YouKlai keeps, why, for how long, and the rights that remain in your hands.

YouKlai is published by Edouard Martin, an individual and the controller of your personal data. For any question or request concerning your data: contact@youklai.com.

Your account has a technical identifier. Your sign-in email is held by our identity provider and is not recorded by our servers. There is no password. Your profile contains your first name, gender choice, city and time zone, country, language and optional date of birth. A profile photo is optional and shared across your connections.

For each connection we keep the latest text with its translation and chosen lettering, the latest photo, up to two drawings, a heart reaction, the connection type and colour, dates and countdown, requests and their outcome, your private nickname and mute setting. We also keep your fixed invitation code, device and notification details, widget key, last app opening, code-entry attempts and a technical incident log containing no shared content or email address.

If you report content, we keep your identifier and the reported person’s identifier, the selected reason, your explanation and a frozen copy of the concerned content (text, photo or drawing). If you block someone, we keep their identifier and first name at the time of blocking so you can remove the block.

An email, first name, gender choice, city and language are required. Date of birth, profile photo and nickname are optional.

We use the data to perform our contract with you: create the account, connect people, deliver content, display widgets and notifications, export and erase data. Security and abuse prevention rely on our legitimate interests. Optional reminders are calculated on your phone and can be disabled. iOS permissions control notifications, location, camera and photos. YouKlai has no advertising, third-party tracker, audience measurement, data sale or automated decision-making about you.

A connected person sees your first name or their private nickname for you, city, local time and weather, country, language, gender, optional birthday and profile photo. A request sends your profile to its recipient; the app shows your first name and city before they decide. Connections cannot see one another. Only your profile photo is shared across them. Your private nickname, mute setting and email are never shown.

Translation takes place on your phone through Apple. No text is sent to a translation provider. A language download may require internet access. The original and translated text are then stored for the chosen recipient and their widgets.

Our servers create notifications, delivered by Apple in the device language. They identify who posted, reacted or requested a connection, never the content itself. You can disable them or mute one person at the source.

When someone enters your code, our email provider sends you their first name and a link to the app. Your address is requested from the identity provider only for delivery and is not stored in our tables or logs. The delivery provider retains what is necessary under its contractual period. Other emails are limited to sign-in and address-change codes from the identity provider.

City names are sent from the phone to a weather service that returns coordinates, conditions and temperature. YouKlai uses them for distance and maps; person cards use Apple Maps. The weather service receives neither identity nor shared content.

Your location is used only when you ask the app to fill in your city. It is requested at roughly one-kilometre accuracy, sent to Apple to obtain the city, time zone and country, then discarded. It is stored neither on the phone nor on our servers; the selected city, zone and country join your profile.

Server rules restrict each connection to its two members and keep files private. Providers and authorised operators access data only when necessary and under confidentiality duties. They cover hosting, identity and codes, email, Apple services and weather, with contractual protection at least equivalent to this policy. Their names are available from contact@youklai.com.

The database and files are hosted in Ireland, in the EU. Some functions use the host’s globally distributed infrastructure and may be processed outside the EEA. Depending on provider and country, transfers rely on an adequacy decision, the EU–US Data Privacy Framework where the entity is certified, or the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses. Copies or references are available on request.

Content remains until replacement, disconnection or account deletion. A text, a photo or the displayed drawing can only be removed by the person who posted it; the other may replace it with their own.

A report, with its frozen copy of the content, is kept for thirty days and then deleted automatically. A block remains until you remove it. A request ends on acceptance, refusal, cancellation or expiry after thirty days. Its outcome remains for ninety days; a code attempt for one day. Device data remains while the account and token remain valid; signing out silences it. Automatic account deletion begins after twenty-three months without opening the app. Incident logs are deleted after ninety days.

Ending a connection erases its shared content and settings for both people. Account deletion erases active data and then identity; blocks you placed or received are deleted, and a report already filed remains until its thirty-day term without your identifier; a nightly task retries if necessary. Files are cleaned in the following days and local copies are erased. Only temporary technical deletion records remain, never deleted content.

You may exercise access, rectification, erasure, portability, restriction and objection rights in the app or at contact@youklai.com. The profile lets you edit data, export a readable archive and trigger deletion directly. You may complain to the CNIL or your competent authority.

YouKlai is for people aged sixteen or over. A date indicating a younger age is refused. The policy date identifies the applicable version, and legally required information is provided before relevant changes.

Terms of use

The essential rules for the service and each of your connections.

YouKlai connects several people across distance through countdowns, local time and weather, translated text, a shared canvas, a photo and widgets. Each connection is isolated. The service is free, with no subscription or in-app purchase, and runs on iPhone with iOS 18 or later. It is for people aged sixteen or over. Your email and a six-digit code provide passwordless access on any device. You are responsible for your mailbox and can change address, sign out or delete the account from the profile.

Each person has a fixed invitation code. Entering one creates a request; its recipient sees your first name and city before deciding. The same two people cannot connect twice. Either person can end a connection, which erases its shared data for both.

You retain ownership of your content and grant YouKlai only the licence required to host and deliver it, including any translation produced by your device, to the recipient and their widgets. The licence ends with the content. YouKlai keeps no history: one text, one photo and up to two drawings per connection. New items replace old ones. A text, a photo or the displayed drawing can only be removed by the person who posted it; the other may replace it with their own. Export anything you wish to keep.

YouKlai is for personal exchanges between consenting people. Harassment, surveillance, coercion and unlawful content are prohibited. You warrant that you have the rights to what you send. A text, drawing or photo opens full screen and carries “Report”, which alerts us with a frozen copy of the content, kept for thirty days; from a person’s card, “Block” deletes the link and prevents that person from adding you again, and can be removed from “Blocked people” in your profile. A report can also be sent to contact@youklai.com. We review every report within twenty-four hours and may request removal, end the relevant connection or close an account where proportionate.

We use reasonable efforts but do not guarantee uninterrupted availability. YouKlai is provided as is and depends on third parties. We are not liable for indirect loss or events outside the service, without excluding liability that the law does not allow us to exclude.

The service and terms may evolve. Their date identifies the applicable version, and changes requiring prior notice are presented before taking effect. You may end a connection or delete the account. Inactive accounts are deleted after the period stated in the policy. We may close an account for a serious breach or legal duty and may end the service.

Data processing is described under Privacy and data. These terms are governed by French law without removing mandatory protections in your country of residence. Contact contact@youklai.com first about a dispute; otherwise the competent courts have jurisdiction.

Support

Clear help to recover your account, solve an issue or contact us.

Check the address and spam folder, then request a new code if needed. Never share the code.

For missing content, check connectivity, reopen the app and confirm the connection still exists. Check iOS permissions and that connection’s mute setting.

The profile lets you end a connection or delete the account. Deletion is permanent. Do not send confidential content to support unless necessary.
